But NBC News has learned that long before the war, the Bush administration had several chances to wipe out his terrorist group, Ansar al-Islam, perhaps kill Zarqawi himself, but never pulled the trigger. June 2002, U.S. government officials say intelligence revealed that Zarqawi and members of Al Qaeda had set up a weapons lab at Kirma in northern Iraq, producing deadly ricin and cyanide. The Pentagon quickly drafted plans to attack the camp and sent them to the White House, where, say government sources, the plans were debated to death.

[...]

MIKLASZEWSKI: Four months later, intelligence showed Zarqawi was planning to use ricin in terrorist attacks in Europe. The Pentagon drew up a second strike plan, and the White House again killed it. By then, the administration had set its course for war with Iraq.

ROGER CRESSEY (NBC terrorism analyst): People were more obsessed with developing the coalition to overthrow [former Iraqi leader] Saddam [Hussein] than to execute the president's [Bush's] policy on preemption against terrorists.

War on terror? Capt. Ed observes"

and is deeply upset that the press doesnt broadcast the apparently baseless acusations Kerry had an affair :

"Yeah. And if this infidelity story were about Bush, with the woman in question out of the country, they'd be running with it in a big way already"

Unfortunately he, as usual gets it wrong. As TAPPED points out

"So -- are the charges collapsing? No. For one thing, the article in question only speaks to one of several issues surrounding this question -- Burkett's allegation that Bush's military records were "cleansed" at the behest of the then-governor's political operation. The question of whether or not Bush ever showed up to do his duty in Alabama remains totally unaffected by this, as do the questions of how it was that so many officials in the National Guard seemed eager to do favors for young Lt. Bush"

And of course anyone looking deeper into the issue knows that the preponderance of evidence is that Bush repeatedly played hooky and in all likelyhood was eventually shipped off to a punishment posting for this and other behavior.. possibly having to do with drunkenness or drug problems.
But that wont Instapundit, whos claim to fame is actually the fact that he never does any real research and relies on glossing over press accounts to issue murky proclamations on how it all bores him if its not picking at some anti-left story.

But the interesting thing here is that a blogger who has for a very long time made pretenses at being unbiased and a critical thinker finally
outed himself as just another Gop apologist. The moves are intended to trim the programs without damaging any essential services, the administration said.

<SNIP>

After filling Halliburton coffers and handing big oil a new 'american protectorate' to play with, and handing the upper upper class the biggest handout in history .. Bush did what right wingers always do: attack the very people sacrificing the most. The very men fighting his war for oil, the poor whove seen the government become more and more openly hostile, and those Bush's incompetant economic leadership has thrown out of work will be the ones paying.

Nothing to see here.. move along...

In a site note.. December 24, 2003.: "Bush's 'ownership' scam
Why Bush's 'Ownership Society' is just another bait and switch.
By Robert Kuttner
Web Exclusive: 12.24.03
Print Friendly | Email Article
In President Bush's upcoming State of the Union Address, we are going to hear a lot about something called an 'Ownership Society.' The idea is that American workers aspire to be owners - owners of stock for their retirement, owners of homes, owners of businesses, owners of good health insurance, and owners of the skills that they need to navigate multiple changes of jobs and careers. It sounds just great.
Take a closer look, however, and you will recognize the trademarked Bush combination of inspiring themes coupled with a complete absence of useful tools. In other words, bait-and-switch.
Other recent examples include No Child Left Behind (millions were); the Medicare drug bill (covers less than half the costs and mainly subsidizes drug companies) and three rounds of huge tax breaks that went mostly to the wealthy. But I digress.
How does Bush propose to create this 'Ownership Society?' Mainly through….more tax credits. If people lack reliable health care, there will be tax-favored savings accounts to buy health insurance. If we need more secure retirement, there are new tax incentives to set aside savings. If jobs are precarious, there are tax credits to purchase re-training when your job moves to China. The sense of pride, the sense of responsibility it inspires. We love our country, and put our lives on the line on its behalf. We believe in what our country stands for -- notions of democracy, and freedom, and truth and justice. We are most intimately aware of the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many of our brothers in arms, because we ourselves were prepared to pay it.
Yet few of the people in charge made that sacrifice. Rather, they went out of their way to avoid serving their country. Cheney had 'better things to do', Bush went AWOL. Virtually all of the 'pundits' cheerleeding this war found creative ways to avoid serving. Wars are for the poor and the stupid to fight. Not for exhalted members of society like themselves.
Well fuck them.
Today is not for them. It's for those of us who wore that uniform, and those who continue serving our country even as their leaders fail them, lie to them, and use them as pawns in their great political and economic chessboard.
And for those of our brothers and sisters in uniform who gave their lives on behalf of noble causes, and those not so noble.
Nobody dare take out their frustrations on our men and women in uniform. They are doing their job, best they can, under impossible conditions.
The political 'leadership', on the other hand, can rot in hell. Jesse A. Givens, 34, of Springfield, Mo. Private Givens was killed May 1 when his tank fell into the Euphrates River after the bank on which he was parked gave way. This letter was written to be delivered to his family if he died. Melissa is his wife, Dakota his 6-year-old stepson and Bean the name he used for his son, Carson, who was born May 29.
My family,
I never thought that I would be writing a letter like this. I really don't know where to start. I've been getting bad feelings, though and, well, if you are reading this. . . .
The happiest moments in my life all deal with my little family. I will always have with me the small moments we all shared. The moments when you quit taking life so serious and smiled. The sounds of a beautiful boy's laughter or the simple nudge of a baby unborn. You will never know how complete you have made me. You saved me from loneliness and taught me how to think beyond myself. You taught me how to live and to love. You opened my eyes to a world I never dreamed existed.
Dakota . . . you taught me how to care until it hurts, you taught me how to smile again. You taught me that life isn't so serious and sometimes you just have to play. You have a big, beautiful heart. Through life you need to keep it open and follow it. Never be afraid to be yourself. I will always be there in our park when you dream so we can play. I love you, and hope someday you will understand why I didn't come home. Please be proud of me.
Bean, I never got to see you but I know in my heart you are beautiful. I know you will be strong and big-hearted like your mom and brother. I will always have with me the feel of the soft nudges on your mom's belly, and the joy I felt when I found out you were on your way. I love you, Bean.

Melissa, I have never been as blessed as the day I met you. You are my angel, soulmate, wife, lover and best friend. I am sorry. I did not want to have to write this letter. There is so much more I need to say, so much more I need to share. A lifetime's worth. I married you for a million lifetimes. That's how long I will be with you. Please keep my babies safe. Please find it in your heart to forgive me for leaving you alone. . . . Teach our babies to live life to the fullest, tell yourself to do the same.

I will always be there with you, Melissa. I will always want you, need you and love you, in my heart, my mind and my soul. Do me a favor, after you tuck the children in. Give them hugs and kisses from me. Go outside and look at the stars and count them. Don't forget to smile.

Love Always,
Your husband,
Jess

As KOS KOS put it :

And just a reminder -- Bush hasn't attended a single funeral. He doesn't have the balls to stand up to these grieving families and tell them his war was worth the sacrifice these families are paying.

Grover Norqist and GOP Ties to the Taliban

Yet another story the mainstream media cant ignore for much longer.

CHER c-span transcript
Peter Slen, C-Span Moderator: Good Morning Miami Beach

caller: good morning! thank you for c-span, i watch it every day!
uh, i would like to say i had the occasion the other day to spend the entire day with troops that had come back from iraq & had been wounded &..um...i also visited troops during the vietnam era...but the thing that i was most shocked by...um...as i walked into the hospital the first person i ran into was a boy about 19 or 20 years old who'd lost both of his arms...& when i walked into the hosptial & visited all these boys all day long...uh...everyone had lost either one arm...one limb or two limbs or had lost one limb & there were...there were a lot of legs that seemed to be missing & a couple of the boys told me it was because that their vehicles ...that the rockets pierce the vehicles so much its like being kind of in a tin can...it doesnt have...there isnt...the walls of the humvees are very soft & theres no protection...but three guys in the same vehicle have lost a leg.
...& another thing that i saw was that...um...if theyd lost one leg that... that shrapnel that had hit the other leg had been so devatating that they were having to pull like the thigh...you know...the muscle & the thigh around the bottom of the calf to try to make the leg workable but in some cases these boys had lost one leg & the other leg was so damaged that they werent sure what they were gonna be able to do.

C-Span Moderator: where did you spend tthe day?

caller: walter-reed.

C-Span Moderator: & youre down in miami beach, back in miami beach?

caller: i'm down here today.

C-Span Moderator: what were you doing @ walter -reed? are you a volunteer?

caller: no, i was just asked to come & spend the day. i was working that day in washington dc &...

C-Span Moderator: what kind of work do you do?

caller: um, i'm an entertainer.

C-Span Moderator: oh, what kind of entertaining? are you USO?

caller: no, i actually was called by the USO but i'm...i'm...i'm just...i'm an entertainer. & i really dont want to go much past that but...um...

C-Span Moderator: is this CHER?

caller: yeah.

C-Span Moderator: (worshipful silence) ok. & you spent the day @ walter-reed.

caller: yeah. & i spent the day with, i mean they were great guys...&...& the the men that took me around were in the...you know...the services, you know, they were fabulous men...uh...mike & john &...& they these boys had unbelievable courage & they still said for the most part hat they were glad that they they did it, they felt that it was their duty...& there were a few of the national guards that felt it was their duty that once they were over there but they wondered why they were taken out of america to spend that much time as as actual service men when they really felt that their job was to be, you know, protecting this country.
...but i i have to say that they had the most unbeleivable courage & it took everything that i have as a person to...to not...you know... break down while i was talkin to these guys...but i just think that if there was no reason for this war this was the most heinous thing i'd ever seen...& also i wonder why...why are none of cheney, wolfowitz, bremer, the president, why arent they taking pictures with all these guys...coz...i dont understand why these guys are so hidden & why...& why there arent pictures of them because you know, talking about the dead & the wounded...thats two different things but these wounded are so devastadley wounded...you know...that i think that... the wounded...its just... its unbelievable...its just unbelieivable to me & i'm an independant but i....

C-Span Moderator: are you supporting anyone yet for 2004?
you supported ross perot, correct? in 92?

caller: yeah, i mean when i heard him talk right in the beginning i thought that he would bring some sort of common-sense business approach & also less partisianship but then of course...you know...i was completley disappointed like everyone else when he just kind of cut & run & no one knew exactly why ...you know...being that maybe he couldnt have withstood all the investigation that goes on now...but...um...you know...i'm not a bush supporter, that for sure...& im definitley not ashcroft or cheney or any of them...but i would just like to see them have...you know, if youre going to send these people to war then dont hide them, you know &...&...& have some... have some news coverage where people are sitting & talking to these guys & seeing how they are & seeing their spirit & its just...i just...
i think its a crime

C-Span Moderator: when you were up here for your farewell concert earlier this month, is that when you went to walter reed?

callr: yeah.

C-Span Moderator: ok well thanks for your time this morning, thanks for watching

callre: oh i have to tell you i watch you every day & i really appreciate it because i go all over the world & i must say that the news we get in america has nothing to do with the news that you get outside of this country & i think thats why people dont..people dont understand why so many of the allies did not...you know, our usual allies did not join us because if you get outside the united states you hear a different kind of news you know & so...

C-Span Moderator: whats your favorite news source outside the US?

caller: well theres a source that i really like inside the US that gives you special documentaries called WORLDLINK but i think my favorite source outside the US is BBC because they are our allies but you still get...on the nightly news you get...you know, much more coverage & i think much more honest coverage...I dont know, i guess they're not...well...they're independant so they're not owned by any of the major corporations that are... you know, have vested interes in this war.

C-Span Moderator: thanks for your call this morning.

caller: ok, thank you!

Why hasnt Bush attended any Soldiers funerals.. or visited the wounded?

Buchanan and Press from late August

An exchange between Four Star General. BARRY MCCAFFREY; BILL PRESS and JOE GALLOWAY, a veteran correspondent, who's probably best known for his book and movie, "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young".

MCCAFFREY: Joe, why aren't we getting news on the number of wounded? Like you, I spent more than two years in Walter Reed as a patient. Why aren't we hearing more visibility on numbers and types of wounds, is there a fear to get, you know, touched by the genie of the bottle, too many wounded...

GALLOWAY: Well, you can find the numbers out, but you've got to go to Walter Reed or you've got to the hospital at Landstuhl and you'll find out that there have been 1,300 wounded American soldiers, GIs, pass through Walter Reed since the beginning of Afghanistan.

To me that's the real failing of the media is that they lose sight of things like that and not enough people go over to Walter Reed and walk through the wards and talk to these kids.

PRESS: Joe, I want to ask you a related question. To my knowledge, and I've talked to a couple of reporters about this. President Bush has not attended the funeral of even one American soldier killed in Iraq. Is that a significant story? And why hasn't there been any media attention to that at all?

GALLOWAY: I don't know the answer to that. I've not seen any story that said he has been to one of those funerals. I think he should. I think it would be-even if it's just a symbolic one guy, go to the funeral.

PRESS: I mean imagine if President Clinton were president now or Al Gore were president now and did not attend the funeral of one American killed in Iraq.

GALLOWAY: I think there would be a firestorm.

MCCAFFREY: Yes, tough issue.

9/11 Commission Could Subpoena Oval Office Files
By PHILIP SHENON

Published: October 26, 2003

ADISON, N.J., Oct. 25 — The chairman of the federal commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks says that the White House is continuing to withhold several highly classified intelligence documents from the panel and that he is prepared to subpoena the documents if they are not turned over within weeks.

Vietnam killing spree revelations shock US

Atrocity to rival My Lai is exposed - after 36 years

Tiger Force operated out of control in the Vietnamese highlands for seven months in 1967. Moving across the region, the platoon of 45 paratroops slaughtered unarmed farmers and their wives and children. They tortured and mutilated victims. A litany of horror has emerged - a baby decapitated for the necklace he wore, a teenage boy for his tennis shoes. A former Tiger Force sergeant, William Doyle, told reporters of a scalp he took off a young nurse to decorate his rifle. The Blade investigation concluded that hundreds probably died. 'We weren't keeping count,' Ken Kerney, a former soldier who is now a California firefighter, told the paper. 'I knew it was wrong, but it was an acceptable practice.' Another, Rion Causey, then a 19-year-old medic and now a nuclear physicist, talked of how villagers were routinely shot: 'If they ran we shot them, and if they didn't run we shot them anyway

..........

Bill Carpenter, a former special infantryman with Tiger Force, believes the self-styled death squad's former commander, Lt James Hawkins, should be held accountable. He 'thoroughly enjoyed killing' and, now retired to Florida, still defiantly defends his platoon's wartime activities. 'I don't regret nothing,' Hawkins has said

Someone needs to shoot this son of a bitch.

The Diebold Memos' Smoking Gun
Volusia County Memos Disclose Election 2000 Vote Fraud

The Diebold Memos' Smoking Gun
Volusia County Memos Disclose Election 2000 Vote Fraud

Even more evidence of massive florida voter fraud and evidence the GOP Bush backers running DIEBOLD are actively aiding the GOP steal elections. Under Resolutions 678 and 687 -- both still in effect -- the United States and our allies are authorized to use force in ridding Iraq of weapons of mass destruction. This is not a question of authority, it is a question of will

Claiming Iraq is an imminent threat :

With these capabilities, Saddam Hussein and his terrorist allies could choose the moment of deadly conflict when they are strongest. We choose to meet that threat now, where it arises, before it can appear suddenly in our skies and cities.

Claiming Iraq is an imminent threat and that Saddam supports terrorists :

Terrorists and terror states do not reveal these threats with fair notice, in formal declarations -- and responding to such enemies only after they have struck first is not self-defense, it is suicide. The security of the world requires disarming Saddam Hussein now.

Bush Appeals Court Choice Under Fire
The California justice is challenged for remarks on the New Deal and Bill of Rights' rea

California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown, President Bush's nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia, ran into skeptical questioning Wednesday from Senate Democrats for speeches in which she referred to the New Deal era as "the triumph of our socialist revolution" and disputed whether the Bill of Rights applied to the states.

Thats just too mindboggling for words.

Too Low a Bar
By PAUL KRUGMAN

Bear in mind that the payroll employment figure right now is down 2.6 million compared with what it was when George W. A senior Palace official said yesterday that detailed plans had been made. "But Downing Street, anxious about possible anti-war protests from the start, has now decided to pull the plug on it," said the official.

"We are liaising with the White House and they have made no attempt to hide their disappointment. They saw it, obviously, as a great photo opportunity."

President Bush's trip is the first full state visit of an American president since the Queen came to the throne 52 years ago. He will travel by helicopter to avoid protesters who line road routes. Other proposed events have also been curtailed or cancelled, and he will not address Parliament because of fears of a boycott by MPs.

With anti-war campaigners, including militant Muslims, determined to make a protest during the visit, Downing Street has decided to stage photo events that they can control. The President and the Queen are expected to be photographed together during tea at Buckingham Palace and inspecting the guard.

I removed Instapundit because.. well.. he's not particularly bright.

Paul Krugman

What we have here is a form of looting." So says George Akerlof, a Nobel laureate in economics, of the Bush administration's budget policies — and he's right. With startling speed, we've blown right through the usual concerns about budget deficits — about their effects on interest rates and economic growth — and into a range where the very solvency of the federal government is at stake. Almost every expert not on the administration's payroll now sees budget deficits equal to about a quarter of government spending for the next decade, and getting worse after that.

.....

George W. So says George Akerlof, a Nobel laureate in economics, of the Bush administration's budget policies — and he's right. You are born, or live somewhere for a certain length of time and are then granted the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in that place. One of those rights being the right to hold a job in that location. But that may not be true for very long.

One of Americas biggest problems, from the point of view of the lower and middle classes, is illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants allow businesses to hire people at a radically lower wage scale, and even threaten to have them deported if they object. It is sortof a reverse serfdom. Opponents of illegal immigration also cite the burden on social and civic systems, though a rational analysis shows that illegal immigrants actually put much more into the system than they get out. Its hard to claim social security, unemployment or welfare benefits when doing so would get you deported. Even if you did pay into these systems.

The solution to this problem might actually be exactly the opposite of what one expects. A shocking one in fact. That is allowing anyone to work anywhere.. without regard to citizenship. Though counterintuitive, the advantages of this system are actually many. First it is no longer necessary to spend huge sums of money arresting and transporting illegal immigrants. There is simply no reason for them to attempt to settle here in the numbers they do. They can, in border states, keep their homes in their native countries and simpy commute to the US. In fact saving themselves a lot of money. Employers can no longer use them as a form of serf-slave labor, because they can, and most likely will, report those attempting to break labor laws to the authorities. As for taking jobs.. illegal immigrants would in fact take fewer jobs as it became harder and harder for employers to force incredibly low wages on them. Americans could compete evenly, and for a fairer wage.

In addition there would likely be some huge political benefits. The US would be much more interested in improving the Mexican economy and allowing mexicans control of their own government once it is in our economic interest to do so (Note: the US has interfered with the mexican political system covertly and overtly for over a hundred years). Racism would likely subside as the worst problems of immigration went away. And the standard of living in mexico would rise. Which in and of itself helps America and americans in the long run.

But what stops this from happening? First is the very fact its so counterintuitive. People will expect waves of commuting workers to flood america. The argument shooting this down is that we already have that. Secondly racism. A certain amount of those so strongly critical of illegal immigration are indeed racists. And thirdly, while this would strongly benefit the lower and middle classes in america in time, it would have just the opposite effect on the upper class.. who arent as some wise people have noted.. even slightly opposed to illegal immigration. Cheap labor puts money in the pockets of the upper class and business owners. And getting rid of this cheap labor means they have to compete on the open market for labor.. and provide fair wages and working conditions.

Of course the last argument is probably the telling one in the US. But one can always hope that at least the argument gets a hearing.

As Joe Conason notes in Salon the originator of the "Letters from home" was none other than Battalion commander Lt. You've probably ingested large quantities of it yourself, if you've ever eaten vegetables straight out of a garden without washing them thoroughly, or if you've ever eaten unfiltered honey. Live C. botulinum is used in undergraduate microbiology labs as a teaching tool...the live bacteria are not dangerous, are ubiquitous in nature, and are ubiquitous in microbiology labs around the globe--even those not hell-bent on the destruction of American liberty & whatnot.
If Kay said that large quantities of purified botulinum toxin had been found, that would be significant. It's difficult to purify the toxin from the bacteria (which produce the toxin in exceedinly small amounts), and there's no good reason to have lots of it.
